| A most awesome biscuits and gravy |

I LOVE biscuits and gravy, to an obscene degree. I hate ordering them in restaurants though because they have such a high capacity for suckage that I am often disappointed. The Biscuits and Gravy at Wayward cafe on Roosevelt are SO BAD that I only ate 2 bites. While the biscuits and gravy and Calamity Jane's (I think is what it is called) in Georgetown are SO GOOD that I are them until I felt sick. I've been having a craving lately though so today I decided to try my hand and some B&G, I've enver made my own before for whatever reason. I used Trader Joe's buttermilk baking mix, Earth Balance and soy milk for the biscuits. I cut the box recipe in half but had to add almost an entire half cup of extra mix to get a good drop biscuit consistency. I cooked up a wad of Jimmy Dean Sage sausage, my favorite sausage ever and set it aside.
I ate this soup for lunch yesterday and was sorely disappointed, it tasted like a bowl of mushroom gravy. Bad for soup, good for gravy. So I used it as the gravy for my B&G by cooking it down with some flour and whisking it to keep it smooth in cast iron skillet (I try to cook in iron as much as possible to increase the iron content in my foods.) I added the cooked sausage at the end and kept it warm until the biscuits were done baking. I made the biscuits huge so they took almost twice as long to cook as the box said. Though I've noticed that none of the recipes on Trader Joe's foods are never very accurate and you have to use your own good judgment. Pour gravy over biscuits and eat. Even my mom ate some and she (until now) hated biscuits and gravy. I don't know how anyone could hate a good biscuits and gravy. |

So you all know that I'm involved in a secret science project at my school right? Well one day as we were hiking down to the creek I mention that we didn't really have a name and I didn't know what to tell people I was doing. So we started playing around with names for our project but nothing seemed to fit. We paused for a minute so that our teacher could point out some devil's club, if you live in the pacific northwest then you've seen it before.
Big shrub with broad leaves, covered in thorns, bright red berries. It's very common out here. Our teacher was telling us about it's medicinal uses and how it is a member of the ginseng family. One of the kids in our group jokingly pointed out that "Devil's Club" would be a great name for our group. It's not official but it stuck. haha I just got an email with the "Devil's Club" contact list attached. Fuckin nerds... |
